“Government should be changing lives, not changing names,” Steenhuisen to say in keynote address to EC Provincial Congress

On Saturday, 28 February 2026, Democratic Alliance (DA) Leader John Steenhuisen will deliver a keynote address at the DA Eastern Cape Provincial Congress, which starts on Friday, 27 February 2026 in Gqeberha. He will directly address the recent outrcry over controversial name changes in several municipalities in the economically struggling province.

In his keynote address, Steenhuisen will set out the case for residents and voters seeing desperate name changes as an admission of delivery failure. A truly inclusive society means one where good governance leads to reliable services, and reliable services lead to job creation and wealth generation. True inclusion must mean job-driven economic inclusion.

The Eastern Cape remains one of the DA’s key provinces, where the party has made significant strides in local governance. The DA previously governed Nelson Mandela Bay and continues to govern Kouga Municipality, ensuring service delivery, accountability, and good governance.

Under the leadership of the DA, municipalities such as Kouga have shown remarkable progress, and Steenhuisen’s speech will underscore the party’s vision for a future where South Africans can thrive in safe, prosperous communities.

Steenhuisen will be joined by DA Federal Chairperson, Dr Ivan Meyer, DA EC Provincial Leader, Andrew Whitfield, and DA EC Provincial Chairperson, Yusuf Cassim.
